Target Information

Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-borne pathogen that causes severe arthritis and fever in humans. The E2 protein, or envelope protein 2, is a key structural component of the chikungunya virion and plays a pivotal role in viral attachment, entry, and fusion with the host cell membrane. The E2 protein is a prime target for the host immune response and is the focus of vaccine development efforts. It contains conserved epitopes that can induce neutralizing antibodies, which are capable of preventing the virus from infecting cells. These antibodies can cross-react with other alphaviruses, reflecting the potential for a broad immune response.
