Target Information

Canine aldo-keto reductase family 1 member A1 (AKR1A1) is a cytosolic enzyme that plays a significant role in detoxifying reactive aldehydes and maintaining cellular redox balance. It catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of aldehyde groups to their corresponding alcohols, contributing to the metabolism of various endogenous and exogenous compounds. AKR1A1 has been shown to protect against oxidative stress by metabolizing lipid peroxidation products, such as 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), which can cause cellular damage. In dogs, AKR1A1's activity is crucial for liver protection during chronic alcohol consumption, as it reduces the accumulation of harmful aldehydes and inhibits p53 activation, thereby preventing hepatocyte apoptosis and inflammation.
