Saint Louis encephalitis is an illness caused by the mosquito-borne Saint Louis encephalitis virus, which is related to the Japanese encephalitis virus and part of the Flaviviridae family. This viral disease is sustained in bird populations and transmitted to humans and horses via the Culex nigrapalpus mosquito.
